As one of the longest roads in Montevideo there is little doubt that you will set foot on this wide boulevard whilst in the city...but do you know the story behind it?
General Jose Gervasio Artigas is the national hero of Uruguay and is immortalized in many forms throughout the country, In 1810 there was a revolution against Spanish rule in Buenos Aires and the first independent local government of the time was set up. Artigas then went to Buenos Aires to offer his assistance in liberating the Eastern Bank of the Rio del Plata (ie Uruguay). He returned to Uruguay with 180 men and laid seige to Montevideo earning him the title "First Chief of the Orientals".
