As I wandered around Montevideo I started to wonder who all these people are that have streets and squares named after them, and why some dates are so important they lay claim over the biggest thoroughfares in the city....so I decided to investigate.
18 de Julio (18th of July) is the main commercial strip in downtown Montevideo. It stretches from the intersection of Tres Cruces (3 crossroads) all the way to Ciudad Vieja (the old city) spanning over 30 blocks of shops, expos, street vendors and more. But what happened on the 18th of July that makes it worthy of this honor?
On this day in 1830, following a war between the United Provinces of Rio del Plata and Brazil over the "Banda Oriental" (Eastern Strip), Uruguay was founded through the signing of the first constitution.
